VoIP security is another hot topic in the voice space. The challenging factor with VoIP and security is that the primary communications protocol used for VoIP is SIP (Session Internet Protocol). The big issue with SIP is that it is totally insecure. This means we need to be very careful how we implement any VoIP solution.voipSecurity

Our approach tends to be one of applying multiple layers of security to VoIP. We use intelligent Firewalls capable of filtering and detecting any unusual characteristics and traffic patterns. On top of this we actually implement a firewalling technology on the VoIP server itself. This technology is based around stopping "dictionary" type attacks. This is where the would be hacker sends a dictionary of passwords at a login to try and gain access by multiple attempts.

On top of all this we have developed, in conjunction with our ITSP of choice, (Internet Telephony Service Provider - Think of them like the Telecom of the VoIP world) a further layer of security.  This looks for any unusual calling patterns from a customer. For instance if your VoIP server all of a sudden starts to make calls to Africa when this has not identified as the norm for your site, the ITSP will "shut down" your connections awaiting approval from the authorised account holder.

As you can see, there is no "silver bullet" here, VoIP security is something we take very seriously and needs to be thought out carefully. Talk to one of our team today to get more information.
